REMARKS :
- The is by far the most accurate list I have been able to come up with. This
title has been split into several different titles throughout its history. The biggest
split was when it was changed to the WCW World Heavyweight Title.
- During the first few years of this century, George Hackenschmidt won World
Championship Tournaments in Itlay, Germany and England. On 05/05/04 in New York, NY, he
beat Tom Jenkins in two straight falls and was recognized as the top Champion in North
America.
- On 03/04/08 in Chicago, IL, George Hackenschmidt left the ring and refused to return
so the referee declared Frank Gotch to be the new Champion.
- Charlie Cutler beat Henry Ordeman and Jesse Westegard in a tournament to claim the
title. On 04/07/15 in Omaha, NE, Joe Stretcher beat Cutler to win the title.
- On 09/04/17 in Omaha, NE, the referee declared Earl Caddock to be the new Champion
after Joe Stretcher refused to return to the ring after the second fall.
- On 23/08/29 in Philadelphia, PA, Dick Shikat beat Jim Londos to become recognized as
the first Champion of the National Wrestling Association (NWA), a division of the
National Boxing Association.
- On 04/05/31 in Montreal, Quebec, Henry DeGlane beat Ed "Strangler" Lewis by DQ to win
the title.
- To stop the controversy surrounding the sport at the time, the match on 09/06/32 in
Long Island, NY, was billed a World Title Match. Jim Londos had been stripped of the
title for refusing to face the winner of this match. Ed "Strnagler" Lewis beat Dick
Shikat to win the title. He later affirmed his claim to the title by beating Jack Sherry
on 10/10/32.
- Ed Don George had been claiming rights to the World Title ever since he beat Henry
DeGlane in Boston in 1933.
- However, due to his victories over Jim Londos, Ed Don George and Ed "Strangler"
Lewis, from 27/06/35 to 30/07/35, Danno O' Mahoney was the closest to an undisputed
World Champion at that time, representing a unification of sorts for the World Title
that had been splintering over the years.
- During the reign of ALi Baba following his win on 24/04/36 in Detroit, MI, Ali lost
the title to Dave Lewin in Newark, New Jersey by DQ. Later, the Athletic Commission
reversed the decision and returned the title to Ali. Soon thereafter, a new ruling was
made to prevent the losing of the title by a DQ win.
- In Spetember 1938, the NWA recognized Everett Marshall as the Champion since Steve
Crusher Casey was out of America and not defending his title on a regular basis.
- The National Wrestling Alliance was organized in July 1948 and Orville Brown was
recognized as its Champion. However, he was forced to retire and relinquish the title
due to injuries suffered in a 11/11/49 automobile accident. Lou Thesz was scheduled to
meet Brown for the title on 25/11/49 and thue was recognized as the new Champion.
- Ric Flair was declared the first ever WCW World Heavyweight Champion in April 1992.
- In September 1991, Flair signed with the WWF and the NWA World Championship was
declared vacant. On 12/08/92 in Tokyo, Japan, the tournament final to determine the new
Champion was held. Masa Chono beat Rick Rude to win the title.
- In September 1993, when the WCW withdrew from th NWA, the title was declared vacant
and renamed the WCW International Title, held in that year by Rick Rude, Hiroshi Hase,
Rude again, Sting, Flair and was finally abandoned when it was unified with the WCW
World Heavyweight CHampionship at Clash of the Champions XXVII on 23/06/94.
- On 19/11/94 in Cherry Hill, NJ, a tournament was held to determine the new Champion.
Chris Candido beat Tracy Smothers to win the title.
