  1. The title was vacated on 04/10/75 when Johnny Valentine was killed in a plane crash.

  2. On 09/11/75, Terry Funk beat Paul Jones in the finals of a 16-man tournament to win the title.

  3. On 12/08/79, Ric Flair vacated the title after winning the NWA World Tag Title.

  4. On 01/09/79, Jimmy Snuka beat Ricky Steamboat in the tournament finals to win the title.

  5. In September 1981, the title was declared vacant after Wahoo McDaniel was stripped of the title after being injured by Abdullah the Butcher. A tournament was held to determine the new Champion.

  6. On 04/10/81, the tournament final to decide the next Champion was held in Charlotte, NC. Sgt Slaughter beat Ricky Steamboat to win the title.

  7. On 07/06/82 in Greenville, SC, Sgt Slaughter was awarded the title after Wahoo McDaniel was unable to show up to defend the title as a result of injuring his left leg at the hands of Mahnificent Muraco and Rowdy Roddy Piper.

  8. Greg "The Hammer" Valentine beat Rowdy Roddy Piper for the title on 30/04/83 in Greensboro, NC, after the referee stopped a match when a bloody gash over Piper's left ear rendered him unable to continue.

  9. On 24/06/84 in Greensboro, NC, after Wahoo McDaniel beat Ricky Steamboat for the title, it was declared vacant due to the interference of Tully Blanchard who hit Steamboat in the head with a chair.

  10. On 07/10/84 in Charlotte, NC, the tournament final to determine the new Champion was held. Wahoo McDaniel beat Manny Fernandez for the title.

  11. In May 1986, Magnum TA was stripped of the title for attacking NWA President Bob Geigel. On 17/08/86 in Charlotte, NC, the final match in a best of seven series was held. Nikita Koloff beat Magnum TA to win the title.

  12. In April 1988, Dusty Rhodes was stripped of the title after hitting NWA President Jim Crockett with a baseball bat. On 13/05/88 in Houston, TX, the tournament final to determine the new Champion was held. Barry Windham beat Nikita Koloff for the title.

  13. The title was declared vacant after Lex Luger won the WCW Heavyweight Title on 14/07/97. On 25/08/91 in Atalanta, GA, a tournament final to determine the new Champion was held. Sting beat Steve Austin to win the title.

  14. The match on 11/01/93 in Atalanta, GA, was originally held to determine the number one contender for the title but Rick Rude had been stripped of the title in December 1992 for not defending the title due to injury. The match was declared a title match and Dustin Rhodes beat Ricky Steamboat to win the title.

  15. Following a double-pin situation between Dustin Rhodes and Rick Rude in May 1993, the title was declared vacant. On 30/08/93 in Atalanta, GA, Rhodes beat Rude to win the title.

  16. On 18/09/94 in Roanoke, VA, Steve Austin won the title from Ricky Steamboat who had to forfeit due to a back injury. Later that evening, Jim Duggan beat Austin to win the title.

  17. In early-April 1995, Big Van Vader was stripped of the title due to multiple violent offenses. On 18/06/95 in Dayton, OH, the tournament final to determine the new Champion was held. Sting beat Meng to win the title.

  18. In September 1997, the title was declared vacant when Ric Flair suffered a shoulder injury. On 29/12/96 in Nashville, TN, the tournament final to determine the new Champion was held. Eddy Guererro beat Diamond Dallas Page to win the title.

  19. On 06/07/98, Goldberg vacates the title after winning the WCW World Heavyweight Title.

  20. On 20/07/98, Bret Hart beat Diamond Dallas Page to get the title.
